Campaign Bulletin!

On the 15th January 2014, Kirklees Council became the 8th Council to pass a motion against destitution! RAA worked with Destitute Asylum Seekers Huddersfield, the Huddersfield City of Sanctuary Group and Cllr Peter O’Neill to take the motion to the first full Council Meeting of the year.

The motion was supported by Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the Independents, and the Council debate features some brilliant words of support from Kirklees Councillors. Cllr Molly Walton, Crosland Moor and Netherton Labour, said: “The minute we deny humanity to folk in other circumstances is the minute we deny our own humanity.”

Kirklees Council now joins 7 other Councils in the call for the end of destitution as part of the asylum process. Check out the wording of the motion and video podcast of the debate on the Kirklees Council Website.
